But, she handles it all with grace and steadiness of character, along with some character growth. She goes through so much, more than someone her age should have to handle. In fact, Hallowed had more emotional drama over action, which I enjoyed. It is so nice to read about a YA character who actually likes and respects her parent(s)! Happily, my favorite things about Unearthly were in abundance in Hallowed. ![]() I also really enjoyed the loving, positive relationship between Clara and her mom. I liked Unearthly for the writing style, tender love story, and well-developed relationships. But this series is making me rethink my stance on angel books. For some reason, and maybe it was because I started with Hush, Hush ( read my original review/ read my second opinion), I have never really gotten in to the angel genre. Unearthly was the first angel book I've ever read that I truly liked. I enjoyed Unearthly and jumped at the chance to read Hallowed on NetGalley. ![]() ![]() ![]() Before the Civil War, Southern agriculture was a primitive and grueling occupation based to a great degree upon slash-and-burn cultivation methods. I can tell you right now that this book basically has nothing to do with angels and demons, and I couldn't be happier about that then I ever have been my whole life. And it isn't just about the mythology it's about love, growing up, truth, prejudices, and overcoming hardships. Laini Taylor has stripped that idea to its bare bones and has changed it morphed it in such a way that it's it own genre. What do I mean by that, you ask? That because this book is nothing about that. That is one of the best, most amazing, lies that I have ever heard. In the synopsis of Daughter of Smoke and Bone, it tells you that this is a story about how a "demon" falls in love with an "angel." Cal is now a man living in Berlin, but decades ago was actually born in Detroit as a girl called Calliope. Middlesex tells the epic story of three generations of the Stephanides family, omnisciently narrated through the eyes of Cal Stephanides. It was engaging and certainly held my attention, yet there were some aspects about it that bugged me slightly and what I’m still making my mind up about. In judging this story fairly, I will say that I truly enjoyed Middlesex for the most part. The subject matter and its corresponding themes are complex yet well written the book itself is a bit of a chunky saga, yet for me, seemed to fly by the narrator is memorable yet not just because of their original and distinctive voice… It’s a novel that seems to divide opinion as to whether or not it deserves all of the accolades that have came its way. This is a pretty tough book to review and it’s an even tougher one to talk about without giving away any potential spoilers about it.
